DESCRIPTION:

Puno’s Plaza Mayor is a wide open space surrounded by historic buildings, including the majestic Puno Cathedral, which dominates one of its corners. The square is paved with cobblestones and features green areas, benches and fountains, creating a welcoming atmosphere for visitors and locals alike.

In the center of the plaza stands a statue commemorating a historical event or a figure important to the city, and is often the focal point of local activities and celebrations. During the day, the plaza is bustling with activity, with street vendors offering local crafts, street musicians playing traditional tunes, and people relaxing under the shade of the trees.

LOCATION:

Located in the Peruvian altiplano, on the shores of Lake Titicaca. This public space is a vibrant and lively meeting point, full of history and culture.

ACTIVITIES YOU CAN DO IN THE CITY CENTER:

  • Walk along the boulevard that makes up 3 blocks, where you can find a variety of craft stores, restaurants, cafes, tourist agencies, banks and exchange houses.
    Walk along Lima street that ends at the Pino park.
    Visit the cathedral of Puno with its “Andean baroque” style, admission is free.
    Visit the Balcony of the Count of Lemos (Don Pedro Fernandez de Castro and Portugal), one of the most striking is located one block from the main square.

CATHEDRAL OF THE MAIN SQUARE:

 

 

 

Built in the 18th century, the cathedral features an imposing Renaissance-style façade, with twin towers rising majestically over the square. Its design combines baroque and neoclassical elements, creating a grand and elegant appearance.

Inside, the cathedral impresses with its magnificent decoration, highlighting its gilded altars, religious paintings and elaborate sculptures. Visitors can admire the artistic and cultural richness reflected in every detail of this important Catholic temple.
